accepting payment on the web

topic posted Tue, April 12, 2005 - 9:56 PM by  Tanichka
Does anyone a recommendation for a credit card service online? I was planning on using mycart.net for accepting payments, but I'd love to hear of any other sites that are good. Paypal is NOT an option as these will be non-auction items.

Thanks,
Tanya

I don't see why Paypal is not an option even if it's not auction items you're using.

Although Paypal has eBay and auction enabled, it also has regular merchant accounts for traditional priced purchases.

I realize that Paypal allows you to use their services for non-auction items, however, my issue with Paypal is that my customers have to sign up and have an account with Paypal to purchase my items. Given that having to go through that sort of rigamarole would probably serve as a deterrent to purchasing my items, Paypal is not a viable option.

ok- just get a Merchant Visa and MC account at your local bank- which will alow you to charge the credit cards.

Then sign up for Verisign SSL and/or PGP email for security and get the credit card number of your customers deliverred to your email inbox or recorded online- which you then can charge on your own.

They don't anymore, from what I remember. Just changed that.

        From PayPal.com:
        What is PayPal Account Optional?

When PayPal Account Optional is turned on, your customers who are new to PayPal will no longer be required to create a PayPal Account to complete a purchase. The customer will go through an alternate checkout, and will have the option to sign up afterward.

PayPal does NOT require purchasers to be members.

When a non-member clicks your purchase button and goes to 'check out' there's a line and link about midway down the page that says "If you are not a member of PayPal, please click here." This allows direct purchase without membership. Obviously, PayPal does not go out of their way to make this more obvious to the visitor.

I think I read on the paypal site that one no longer has to sign up and have an account. It would help the purchasers to have a number of options, so you really should make it available for those of us who use it as often as I do.

Would be great if someone posted to a website a survey to learn what service or method(s) the majority of us use. One could do that with Javascript quite easily.

I have a basic website through earthlink and don't use frontpage extensions. I use their basic format. I have contacted a company called ibill.com and they have a password and credit card merchant service that would allow me to charge for a person to use part of my site. I might even create a separate site in the form of a blog and the link woule go to this. I will be charging a monthly fee for the newsletter. At this point, I won't be adding a shopping cart.

My concern is it will be 14% per transaction and/or monthly fees. I notice some of the companies mentioned which I will check out. I have thought about ebay but not sure if they are able to set up the password system that would monitor users comings and goings.

    Thanks.

I checked out paypal. It actually is pretty cool. I was looking for something of a startup to give someone else a shot, but paypal is tough to beat. No money up front. I was right about ibill. 15% of the transaction. Pretty steep.

Paypal lets one do subscription or monthly charging which is cool. Pretty easy to set up too.

I'm getting ready to use Pay Pal for credit card transactions. I have some concerns about this however. Pay Pal has a nasty reputation of closing accounts for little or no reason. If I get a negative feedback on E-Bay for instance, PayPal might decide to close my account pending investigation. It has happened to quite a few people.

I'm having a really tough time with this as well.
I setup my partners site using osCommerce, they got a merchant ID and swipe box, but now I'm trying to figure out how to accept cc online. When I talk to the folks at the merchant ID company where they signed up, I feel like I'm talking to someone from Mars. I can't seem to get a clear cut answer about what I'm supposed to do next.
It really sucks that there is not an easier way to get this all working.

There are so many companies to talk to, just move on to the next one. There is no reason to have to put up with bad service.

    Hi,

I've had my site up since May 2005 and have used PayPal to accept payments. I have not had any trouble with it at all. My customers are happy with it, and they DO NOT have to sign up to be a member of PayPal in order to pay, it's their choice and I like it that way.

There are no upfront costs & you can ship the items out using PayPal as well, although I do use USPS too.

The major drawback from my standpoint is the amount of scams using PayPal (and eBay) like letters to get into your account. They are pretty obvious though & I always forward them to spoof central .... (spoof@PayPal.com or spoof@eBay.com).

Do you use the free PayPal transaction service or do you pay? The difference being that with the free one, your customers know they are going to paypal. As far as the spoofs, if you are using FireFox or Opera, they are pretty easy to spot. Not so easy in IE.

        Hi Blue,

I use the free version of PayPal, so my customers do know they are paying with PayPal. I'm not ready to pay for the upgrade yet, so I'm waiting to see what happens after the holidays. I'll reassess then.

I also offer them a money order option too, but that does delay getting their order. A couple have done that, not many.

Just as an update: I do my web hosting, shopping cart, etc, etc with Monster Commerce and it is working well thus far. I like having the internal shopping cart, and my merchant account is handled through Bank Card Services.

i have a great payment solution: www.authorize.net. haven't been with them long, but so far so good. might also recommend a comersus shopping cart, but i haven't tried it yet. currently i use godaddy.com's shopping cart. it integrates nicely with authorize.net.
